It is fun seeing all of the different costumes runners and walkers wear at the Richmond Jingle Bell Run/Walk

It was early in the morning.

It was cold.

It was a lot of fun.

On Saturday, the Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Run/Walk was held in Richmond, Virginia. It was one of several Jingle Bell Run/Walks taking place across the nation during the holiday season to help in the fight against arthritis.  One of the highlights of the event each year is to see the costumes people wear.

When I am asked about how to distinguish a charity walk from others, creating a theme for the event is one of the answers I give.  The Arthritis Foundation Jingle Bell Run/Walk is an excellent example.  A significant amount of joy comes just from seeing the costumes participants are wearing to the event.  It adds an element of fun that most charity walks do not experience.

Climbing stairs can make for a unique charity walk experience

This is a unique charity walk that has a route that goes up!  If you are in the New York City area, consider participating in this charity walk to help victims of domestic violence.

STORY BY STORY

Date: Thursday, November 18, 2010
Time: 5:30—9:30 pm
Place: 1411 Broadway at 39th Street, Manhattan
Hosts: The Blackstone Group, Equity Office Properties and The Swig Company

Hundreds of inMotion supporters will climb a 42-story skyscraper in Manhattan on
November 18th to help end domestic violence. Former Knicks star John Starks and WNBA
players from the New York Liberty women’s basketball team will be on hand to cheer
fundraising teams from New York’s top firms in law, accounting, financial services and
investment banking.

The 756-step climb takes place in the heart of the Fashion District and Times Square at
1411 Broadway. Opening ceremonies hosted by Elise Finch from WCBS-TV’s news team
begin at 6:45 pm, followed by kick-off at 7:00 pm. Some climbers will climb to the top—
others will take a shorter route—but all will raise financial support and awareness for
inMotion and the women it serves.

Climbers end on the roof with breathtaking views of the Manhattan skyline and Hudson
River. A finish line party follows, with prizes awarded for the top individual and team
fundraisers

Be a part of a critical chapter in the life of an abused family. Find out how you can help
climbers reach new heights so that New York City’s most vulnerable families can escape
abuse.

WHY CLIMB

According to the Centers for Disease Control, an estimated 1.3 million women in the United
States are assaulted by an intimate partner every year. In New York City alone, the NYPD
responds to more than 650 domestic violence incidents a day. InMotion’s free legal services
make new beginnings possible for battered women and children—story by story, case by
case.

Walk on the Wild Side

Entry fee for this event is $25 per adult (children free) until September 24th.  Late registration begins September 25th and is $35 per adult (children free).

This is a great family and friends fun event.  There are some great prizes worth getting sponsor dollars:

Walk on the Wild Side

A crowd of people assembled on a Saturday morning in Fredericksburg, Virginia in support of AIDS awareness. The event was the Fredericksburg, VA 5K AIDS Awareness Walk & Run. It was held at the Cannon Ridge Golf Course on Saturday, June 26, 2010.

It was a fun event. The event appeared to go very smooth and looked easy. However, that only happens when a significant amount of planning and preparation take place. There was a large number of volunteers available to direct traffic, register runners and walkers, as well as a number of additional duties required to carry out a successful athletic charity event.

Runners and walkers paid a registration fee to sign up for the event. T-shirts were sold online in advance of the event. Proceeds raised from the charity walk/run event support Home Of Miracles and Embraces (HOME). The funds will be used to assist children infected and affected by HIV/AIDS and other prevention and Intervention initiatives regarding the myths and truths of HIV/AIDS throughout our communities.

Boogie for your bum at the Annual Walk/Run for Colon Cancer Canada! On June 13, you can bring your kids, bring your parents, you can even bring your dog to tango, twist, prance or polka all the way to the finish line. This year participants have the option of a 5 km walk, with music and dancing, or a 10 km run.

All participants will be eligible to take part in a draw for fantastic incentives and prizes. Prizes will be awarded for the top fundraisers.

Over the last thirteen years, the annual Colon Cancer Canada Walk/Run has raised over $1 million to support colon cancer research across Canada. This year, more than ever is an exciting time to join in the walk/run as Colon Cancer Canada will make even a bigger difference by joining forces and merging with the Colorectal Cancer Screening Initiative Foundation. Get Loose For Your Caboose!

Walkers passed by the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and National World War II Memorial at the 2010 DC Arthritis Walk

The charity walk started at the National Sylvan Theater, right next to the Washington Monument. I can’t imagine a better setting for charity walks.

My son and I arrived while volunteers were in the middle of setting up for the event. There were multiple tents set up for volunteers, registration and refreshments. There were fun activities including a basketball game and pitching game. Face painting was also a hit. The location was spacious enough that some even played catch with a frisbee.

The stage at the National Sylvan Theater allowed everyone in attendance to see and hear the opening ceremonies. Two MCs kept the opening portion running smoothly. Of special interest was a proclamation from the Mayor of Washington, DC in support of the event that was read to the participants and the attendance of both the reining Mrs. Virginia and Mrs. Maryland (they helped lead exercises before the walk).

The charity walk route took walkers around the Washington Monument and past the National World War II Memorial and Lincoln Memorial. People travel from all over the world to visit these sites!

The DC Arthritis Walk raises money and awareness to support the Arthritis Foundation in the fight against arthritis. A disease that affects 46 million people and 300,000 children in the U.S. This year, the DC Arthritis Walk has already raised more than $105,000 for this important purpose.
