If you believe that “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”, then it’s time to take a walk. If every single step of these charity walks will lead to a successful end goal of giving hope and lending help to countless lives and faceless people in our corner of the world, then get moving!
First of all, the desire to help must be there. The seeds of awareness that suffering, sickness, and poverty truly do exist and affect our fellow human beings and their families in ways and depths we cannot fully comprehend should be enough motivation for us to start these charity walks.
Planning is everything. Well, it’s not exactly everything, but if you sit down and talk, a few burst of inspiration here and there might turn into a real brainstorm of ideas. A core group can be formed by key people to get the movement started and eventually to monitor developments and see that participants and volunteers stay motivated.
The next step would be for the core group to zero in on one particular charity you would want to support and raise funds for, whether it’s for cancer patients, for babies with congenital malformations, or for the poor and homeless. Of course, you would like to help as many people as you can, but it’s more realistic and sincere to focus our energy and resources on one goal at hand. Let the charity event coincide with the celebration of its anniversary on a given calendar date. It can only heighten awareness and increase participation from the government and public.
Gather a list of potential sponsors and donors to support and promote the event. This will also determine whether a registration fee should be charged for the upcoming walk.
At the earliest, set the date and time for the charity walk. Decide on the length of race, the route to be taken, and the official time at which it starts. Estimate how many people are foreseen to participate. A bigger crowd generates more support and sparks greater enthusiasm for a cause.
With the framework of the event in place, execution of action plans begins. A meeting can now be initiated to discuss particulars such as policies, ground rules, schedules, delegation of work, and distribution of responsibilities.
Attention should be given to details that cannot be overlooked like safety, traffic, first aid and massage personnel, food and refreshments, rest rooms, entertainment, and after-activity cleanup.
As part of security measures, the local police and law enforcement agencies should be notified and tapped for alert and standby to assist in the smooth flow of the event.
As soon as word gets out about the charity walk, you are sure to receive a reaction. Whether positive or negative, any reaction is better than no reaction at all. Take observations and criticisms positively and objectively. Use them to your advantage in making the event a better one.
Who said that charity walks are a stroll in the park? If you’re not having fun yet, then the real fun will come when the marathon starts. What’s more, the happiest and most fun part is seeing that people do care as much or maybe even more than you do. Cheers to the human race!
Thanks,
