It rained on the morning of the Richmond Arthritis Walk, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the many who turned out to support the fight against arthritis.
The charity walk event was held on April 24, 2010 at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Medical Center at Stony Point in Richmond, Virginia. The Arthritis Walk is the signature fundraising event for the Arthritis Foundation.
The area was filled with music, food and fun. Just seeing the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile put a smile on my face as I arrived at the charity event. The participants were led in a Tai Chi warm up exercise routine just before walking the three-mile or optional one-mile course.
One thing I found very interesting and exciting is that the Arthritis Foundation is now accepting donations via text messaging. This event was the first one to offer the service to participants. I wrote about the importance of this donation technology a couple of years ago at http://www.everydaygivingblog.com/2008/05/mobile-giving.html.
I enjoyed being a part of the Richmond Arthritis Walk. If you were not able to be there, watch the slide show below to view some of the pictures I captured at the event. Consider getting involved in an Arthritis Walk near you.
The Arthritis Foundation is addressing the needs of some 46 million Americans living with arthritis, the nation’s most common cause of disability. To learn more about how to get involved in an Arthritis Walk in your area, go to http://LetsMoveTogether.org.

I would like to know the date for your 2011 walk. and how to register.
Hi Velma,
The 2011 Arthritis Walk is taking place at Kings Dominion on April 30. You can check out the details and register at http://2011ArthritisWalkRichmond.kintera.com. I hope to see you there!
This is a great event and we will cover it in our disabled blog. I hope you raise a lot of money for arthritis – it is the most awful affliction. Able-bodied people don’t appreciate how lucky they are to walk without pain.
my father suffered from arthritis at a relatively young age. We wouldn’t be able to attend your 2011 event but I know that my dad would love to make a donation. I see that the event is less than a week away, we will be in the area and hopefully will be able to at least watch. Good luck!

I’m not Velma but thanks for sharing that!
This is a wonderful event for those who are experiencing arthritis and those who are supporting the cause. I think the walk is very symbolic and is a way for encouraging the people to stay healthy despite their old age. By the way, is this event done every year?

Hi!
I have always been active in a lot of fundraising activities. I understand the happiness and fulfillment that the participants feel during this activities, in this case the “Richmond Arthritis Walk”. It always feels good to do something for those who are in need. It’s nice to know that the Arthritis Foundation in the US are active in finding help for the 46 million Americans who are suffering from the disease.

Yes this is definitely a great event and it was an eye opener as well for all people that arthritis does not attack old people but any one at any age.
Joe,
Yes, many people don’t know arthritis can affect kids as well as adults. Thanks for your support of the Arthritis Walk.
It’s good to see how people are working together to help others. I was really amazed that a lot of participants still joined the Richmond Arthritis walk even though it rained in the morning. I hope the fund raising activity of Arthritis Foundation would help many arthritis sufferers.

Sheena,
Arthritis has a larger impact on families than many people understand. That is one of the reasons there are so many passionate about supporting the Arthritis foundation through events like the Arthritis Walk. Your support is appreciated.
please let me know your dates for 2011`s walk.
Hi There Charitywalksblog,
This question may be a little off-topic There are a lot of daily tasks that become increasingly difficult with age. Often, this is as a result of mobility limiting diseases, such as arthritis. Walking around and standing up without any help is one of the more common difficulties people have, but limited vision can also make things like driving much more difficult as well. Falling while standing up and the inability to stand independently are some of the more common obstacles to those who are older, so often a lift chair is used in the home.
BTW great blogpost
